Why does Skippo's navigation cost money?

Developing a modern, reliable, and smart boating navigation app naturally involves significant costs, and as a company, we need to charge for certain features. It’s simply about being able to run a professional operation – with skilled developers, support, server costs, and a team here in Sweden working year-round to give you the best possible experience on the water.

Skippo is still very affordable

We’re well aware of what other navigation apps cost – and we dare say that Skippo is one of the most affordable options on the market. Our goal is to offer you a modern and easy-to-use tool for safer and more joyful boating, without costing a fortune. We focus on everyday boaters, and that’s why we aim to be a cost-effective alternative to expensive plotters and other navigation services, so that everyone can afford a solution that fits their needs. That’s also why Skippo is available in several different subscription plans with various features and content – to suit you!

We pay so you can navigate

One of our biggest costs is directly related to navigation. The Swedish Maritime Administration charges a fee for each user who can navigate using their official charts. This means that – unlike just viewing the map – we have to pay a license for every person who uses the app for actual navigation. That’s an important reason why we’ve chosen to make navigation a paid feature.

Detailed charts are reserved for paying users

To comply with the agreement with the Swedish Maritime Administration, we cannot allow free users to navigate using the chart. This has always been the case, but to follow the rules we have chosen to limit how far you can zoom into the chart. This means you can still view the entire coastline, plan routes, save places, and explore harbors – but if you want to see all the details and zoom in properly, for example to navigate, you’ll need a subscription. For free users, the chart functions as an overview map, and it is neither allowed nor safe to use for boat navigation.

We hope you understand why some features come at a cost – and that you feel Skippo is worth it. Our goal is to create the best boating app in the Nordics. And we want you to be part of that journey.
