Recently, we’ve noticed—both through our own testing and valuable feedback from users—that GPS updates on iOS devices can sometimes be unreliable. This mainly occurs at low speeds or in areas with weaker GPS signals.
This issue is related to your device’s internal GPS handling and is not unique to Skippo. It also affects other services that use GPS, such as navigation apps. We’re conducting a full investigation and are in contact with Apple. Early findings suggest that this may be linked to how iOS manages location updates—it appears the device stops updating the position when it detects that you are not moving, likely to save battery. This issue has not been identified on Android devices.
What are we doing?
Our technical team is actively investigating the issue and working on solutions specific to GPS behavior on iOS.
What can you do in the meantime?
If your position gets stuck or doesn’t appear at all:
-
Try gently shaking your phone – this can help “wake up” the GPS as the device then understands it is moving.
-
If the issue continues, close and reopen the app.
-
If you still don’t get an accurate position, you are likely in an area with very weak GPS coverage. Navigate with caution, use the chart to confirm your position manually, and wait for the GPS signal to return.
-
Add an external GPS receiver for even more accurate positioning. Our users recommend the Garmin Glo 2.
A friendly reminder
We understand this can be frustrating—especially when relying on the app in narrow passages or when docking.
Remember, digital navigation is an excellent aid—but nothing beats good judgment at sea. Use Skippo as a helpful tool, but always navigate with seamanship in mind.
